A Coffee, a Friend, and the Truth No One Wants to Admit
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the air as you lean back in your chair, one arm casually stretched across the top. Your friend, Sarah, sits across from you, sipping her latte and eyeing you curiously.
She notices you’ve been a little quiet, lost in thought, and decides to ask:
Sarah:
“What’s on your mind, K?”
You tilt your head slightly, meeting her gaze with a deadpan expression, completely unphased by the question. After a pause, you respond:
You:
“Sex.”
The words land like a thunderclap in the middle of the serene café atmosphere. Sarah freezes mid-sip, her eyes widening in disbelief.
Sarah:
“I’m sorry, what?!”
You:
“You heard me.” (Shrugs nonchalantly, picking up your cup to take a sip of coffee.)
Sarah sets her cup down, staring at you with her mouth slightly open. She’s torn between bursting into laughter and genuinely questioning everything she thought she knew about you.
Sarah:
“K, are you okay? What are you even — what is happening right now?”
You lean forward slightly, resting your elbows on the table, still completely composed.
You:
“Look, Sarah, I’m human. What did you think I was? An alien? Of course, that’s where my mind went. Why wouldn’t it? People act like it’s some big mystery when, really, it’s not.”
Sarah blinks at you, utterly speechless, while the corners of your mouth twitch as if daring her to challenge you.
You:
“It’s the truth. Don’t act like you’ve never thought about it. We’re all human. We all have these moments. I just happen to say them out loud because, unlike most people, I don’t live in dissonance. Now, can we talk about something else, or are you going to sit there acting shocked all day?”
Sarah finally bursts into laughter, shaking her head in disbelief.
Sarah:
“I can’t with you. I literally can’t. You’re unreal.”
You:
(Smiling smugly)
“Thank you. Now, about that networking event next week — have you figured out who’s going?”
And just like that, the conversation shifts, leaving Sarah equal parts bewildered and amused while you casually finish your coffee like nothing happened.
“Honesty and humor are vital, but they must always align with truth and respect for boundaries. This is not about oversharing or ignoring the limits of decency — it’s about embracing the clarity and humanity God designed us for.”
