The Baby Shower

Setting: Ella and Jake’s backyard, filled with pastel balloons, scattered chairs, and the warm hum of cheerful conversations. Sarah stands near the dessert table, nibbling on a mini cupcake as she surveys the scene.

Internal Monologue (Sarah):

Sarah listens to the laughter around her, trying to focus on the soft texture of the cupcake in her hand. It’s her third ‘friendly reminder’ today:

“Don’t wait too long, Sarah. You don’t want to miss your chance to have kids!”

The words echo faintly, tugging at her thoughts.

“Why is it always this? As if the depth of my life can only be measured in milestones like marriage and children. It’s not even about me — it’s about them trying to validate their choices. I’m happy. I know what I want. They should work on their own peace of mind instead of projecting onto mine.”

Sarah spots a nearby group laughing over baby clothes and gifting games. For a moment, she feels a flicker of isolation, but she takes another sip and reminds herself:

“Life isn’t a checklist. It’s about meaning, not timelines.”

Interaction with Guests:

She sets her cupcake down and moves toward the gift table to greet Ella, who’s surrounded by friends.

“Sarah! I’m so glad you could come.” Ella beams, pulling her into a hug despite the slight awkwardness of her growing belly.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” Sarah replies warmly. “You’re glowing, by the way. The cake looks amazing — did you bake it yourself?”

Ella laughs. “I can barely tie my shoes these days. Jake ordered it from that bakery I love.”

They exchange a few more pleasantries before Ella gets swept away by another guest. Sarah smiles and steps back, scanning for something to snack on. She heads toward the refreshment table, where a bowl of fruit punch sparkles in the sunlight.

The Meeting:

As Sarah reaches for a plate of strawberries, a voice beside her speaks:

“Careful with that punch — it’s sweeter than the cake.”

Sarah turns to see a man pouring himself a glass. He has an easy smile and a calm presence that catches her off guard.

“Noted,” she says, a small smile forming. “Though I think I can handle a sugar overload today.”

He chuckles, his tone warm. “It’s Jake’s doing, I bet. He has a sweet tooth the size of Texas.”

Sarah tilts her head. “You know Jake?”

“College roommates,” he replies, extending a hand. “David. And you?”

“Sarah,” she says, shaking his hand. “Ella’s an old friend from high school.”

David nods, leaning slightly against the table. “So, how are you surviving the baby shower gauntlet? Diaper raffles, unsolicited advice, the works?”

Sarah laughs lightly. “Barely. I’ve already hit my limit with the ‘your clock is ticking’ comments.”

David’s smile fades slightly as his expression softens. “That one never gets old, huh? Like happiness has an expiration date.”

Sarah’s shoulders relax at his understanding tone. “Exactly. It’s not about me — it’s about them needing to justify their choices. But I’m fine. I know what I want.”

David studies her for a moment, nodding. “Refreshing to hear someone say it. Most people just nod along.”

Sarah raises an eyebrow, intrigued. “And you? Do you think happiness has an expiration date?”

“Not at all,” David replies simply. “Life’s about meaning, not milestones. And meaning doesn’t follow a schedule.”

For the first time that day, Sarah feels truly at ease. “That’s exactly what I think,” she says.

The Invitation:

David hesitates for a moment, then smiles. “You know, I’ve got a feeling we could talk about this for hours. Coffee sometime?”

Sarah tilts her head, smiling back. “Coffee sounds great.”
