Real Love, Real Connection: Lunch Under the Sun (5)

New here? Start where it all begins: A Beginning at a Baby Shower.

Setting: A sunny corner of the market, where a cluster of picnic tables sit shaded by colorful umbrellas. The group settles at a table with paper plates piled high with food. Ella and Jake sit close together, sharing a plate of fries, while Sarah finds herself across from David.

Ella:

(gesturing to the food) I told you guys this place was good. You can’t beat the garlic fries.

Jake:

(teasing) You mean my garlic fries?

Ella:

(rolling her eyes) Sharing is caring, Jake.

Group laughter

(Sarah picks up her sandwich, smiling at the banter. Across the table, David leans back in his seat, observing the group with an easy expression.)

Ella (to Sarah):

So, what do you think? Worth skipping your Saturday work session for?

Sarah:

(grinning) Definitely. Though I’m probably going to regret not finishing that design later.

Ella:

(shaking her head) You work too much. You need more days like this — fresh air, good food, and some much-needed socializing.

Jake:

(mock-serious) And you’ve got us to thank for that. Consider it our public service.

David:

(smirking) You’re really doing the world a favor, huh?

Another Friend (Chris):

(teasing) Honestly, Jake, it sounds like you’re just jealous she’s more productive than you’ll ever be.

Jake:

That’s not jealousy — that’s admiration. Someone’s got to drag Sarah out of her cave so the rest of us can catch up.

Sarah:

(laughing) I don’t live in a cave. It’s a perfectly respectable apartment, thank you very much.

(Ella exchanges a knowing glance with Jake, her teasing tone softening slightly.)

Ella:

We’re just saying. You deserve a little fun every now and then.

(Sarah shrugs, her smile lingering as she takes another bite. The group shifts focus to a story Jake begins telling about a recent work mishap, but Sarah notices David watching her for a moment before he joins the laughter.)

(Jake finishes his story, the group laughing and passing around fries. Sarah leans back, sipping her drink as Ella turns to David.)

Ella:

So, David, did Jake tell you he almost didn’t make it here today?

David:

(raising an eyebrow) Really? And here I thought you two were the most organized couple I know.

Jake:

(smirking) Don’t let Ella fool you. She lost her keys again.

Another Friend (Maya):

(grinning) Ella, you really need one of those tile tracker things. Jake can’t keep bailing you out forever.

Ella:

(defensive) That was one time!

(Sarah exchanges a quick smile with David, catching the amusement in his expression.)

David:

Sounds like you two balance each other out pretty well.

Jake:

(playfully) More like she keeps me on my toes.

Another Friend (Chris):

(laughing) It’s not keeping him on his toes — it’s keeping him humble. Big difference.

Ella:

And you’d be lost without me.

(Jake grins, the lighthearted exchange revealing their secure and playful relationship. Sarah watches them, her expression thoughtful.)

(As the group begins clearing their plates, Sarah moves toward the trash bin, her drink in hand. David follows, stepping into her pace naturally.)

David:

So, not regretting skipping your design session yet?

Sarah:

(smiling) Not yet. But ask me again when I’m pulling an all-nighter to finish it.

David:

(grinning) If it helps, I think you made the right call.

(Sarah looks at him, catching the sincerity in his tone. For a moment, the noise of the market seems to fade slightly.)

Sarah:

Thanks. I think I did too.

(They rejoin the group, but the quiet exchange lingers as everyone begins gathering their things.)

(As the group gets ready to leave, Ella glances over at Sarah with a mischievous smile.)

Ella:

Hey, Sarah, we’re thinking of heading to that dessert stall before we go. You in?

(Sarah hesitates for a moment, glancing at David.)

Ella:

(slyly) Or maybe you two have other plans?

(The group chuckles lightly, but Ella’s teasing lands with a warmth that Sarah doesn’t mind. She exchanges a quick glance with David, who raises an eyebrow in silent amusement.)

Another Friend (Maya):

(playfully) I mean, dessert’s great, but if you guys do have other plans, we can totally clear the way.

Sarah:

(teasing back) I’ll come — for the dessert, not your commentary.

(Ella laughs, and the group begins walking toward the dessert stalls, the teasing leaving the moment open for what’s to come next.)
